Health Law, Bioethics & Human Rights Concentrator’s Guide 2013-14
Overview of the Concentration
The mission of the Department of Health Law, Bioethics & Human Rights is to promote an understanding of law, ethics, and human rights as instruments of social policy and public health. We fulfill that mission by teaching, conducting research, supporting Global Lawyers and Physicians (an international non-governmental organization dedicated to promoting the link between health and human rights) and presenting conferences and symposia for academics, policy makers and the public.
Our primary goal is to introduce all MPH students to the legal system and its role in protecting public health and to enable concentrators to obtain a deeper understanding of how the law can be used to enhance the health of the public.
Health Law, Bioethics & Human Rights concentrators have a broad spectrum of interests. Most of them plan to be public health practitioners, who must be able to use legal principles appropriately in designing programs, analyze policy options, and make sophisticated arguments in their work. A concentration in Health Law, Bioethics & Human Rights is particularly appropriate for people who work or plan to work in public policy, advocacy, legislative, and regulatory arenas.
Most of our concentrators have had no previous experience studying law. A few concentrators are JD/MPH dual-degree students or attorneys considering careers in health policy, academia, or focusing on Health Law, Bioethics and Human Rights in their practices. Some concentrators pursue an additional advanced degree in law, medicine or public policy.
