The Fear of Falling: It’s a Matter of Balance

An 8-session group program that addresses older adults’ fear of falling. This program focuses on physical, social, and cognitive factors affecting fear of falling.

The program was designed to benefit community-dwelling older adults who are concerned about falls, have sustained a fall in the past, restrict activities because of concerns about falling, are interested in improving flexibility, balance and strength, and are age 60 or older, ambulatory and able to problem-solve.

During the class, participants learn to view falls and fear of falling as controllable, believe that they can engage in an activity without falling, set realistic goals for increasing activity, change their environment to reduce fall risk factors, and promote exercise to increase strength and balance.

Strong for Life

A home-based exercise program for both disabled and non-disabled older adults. It has been proven to increase strength, balance, and overall health in both populations.

The Strong-for-Life program was specifically developed for sedentary older adults with some degree of physical disability.  The program uses color-coded elastic bands of varying thickness to individualize resistance. The exercises include movement patterns that incorporate the same motions associated with functional activities. All routines can be performed in a seated or standing position. The program contains warm-up, strengthening, and cool-down exercises.
