Dear Colleagues:

I hope everyone has had a great start to the new year.

We have several upcoming Think. Teach. Do. regional receptions, this month the first being in Miami on February 28. Jacob Bor, assistant professor of global health, will deliver a talk on population health titled “Population Health in an Era of Rising Income Inequality.” We will also be in Washington, DC, on March 6 where Candice Belanoff, clinical assistant professor of community health sciences, will deliver a talk titled “Structural Racism, Neighborhood Opportunity, and Premature Birth: Preliminary Data from Massachusetts.” I hope to see many of our alumni and friends of the school in both Miami and DC.

We also have several of our Signature Programs happening here on campus this month. Our annual Bicknell Lecture in memory of William J. Bicknell, founder and chair emeritus of the Department of Global Health, will take place on February 7. The topic of debate this year will be “Can We Talk? Bridging Political Divides for the Health of the Public.” We will also host a Public Health Forum on “Applying Lessons Learned from the Master Settlement Agreement with Big Tobacco to Other Industries” on February 14. As always, signature programs are livestreamed for those unable to attend on campus.

Last, I want to announce that Boston University’s Annual Giving Day will be on Wednesday, April 11. This year for Giving Day, we are trying something different to help spread the word. We are hoping that you, our alumni, will submit short videos to us answering the following two questions: What did SPH mean to you, and what advice do you have for the next generation of public health practitioners? We will be using these videos on social media and other outlets to promote Giving Day to the SPH community. If you are interested in participating, please email Arielle Fischer at sphdar@bu.edu for more details.

I hope everyone has a terrific month.

Warmly,

Sandro
