Dear Colleagues:

Excellence and innovation in public health research is central to the mission of our school. To advance this mission, SPH faculty members require resources to support the development of competitive grant applications across a broad range of topics.

We are delighted to report that in Fall 2017, we awarded $79,054 in support of five new pilot projects at SPH. These new awards bring the cumulative total for 2017 to $243,478, which include five Early Career Catalyst Awards, seven Established Investigator Innovation Awards, and two Educational Innovation Awards. This impressive portfolio of new projects represents an important step toward strengthening our research portfolio at SPH.

These awards were made possible in part by philanthropic support from several corporate contributors as well as individual benefactors who have invested in public health innovation at SPH over the past year. Early Career Catalyst Awards support pilot projects from junior faculty as they launch their independent research careers, and Established Investigator Innovation Awards support pilot projects from more senior investigators.

Please join me in congratulating the Fall 2017 pilot award recipients:

Early Career Catalyst Awards:

  • Monica Onyango, Improving Adherence to Antiretroviral Therapy among Adolescents in Kenya
  • Monica Wang, Feasibility of the Mobile Diabetes Educator: A Child-Centered Tool for Youth with Diabetes and Their Parents

Established Investigator Innovation Awards:

  • Les Boden, The Impact of Workplace Injuries on Disability and Mortality
  • Bernie Harlow, Thymic Function and Vulvodynia – A Novel Approach for Confirming Immune Dysfunction
  • Jennifer Weuve, Air Pollutants in the Olfactory Bulb: Exploring a Portal of Entry into the Brain

I would like to thank the Research Committee for their effort reviewing the large pool of excellent applications. Please note that the next deadline for pilot applications is March 1, 2018.

Best,

Michael McClean, ScD
