A Message from the Dean: Bob Horsburgh, who has served as Chairman of the BUSPH Department of Epidemiology since 2000, has informed me of his desire to step down from his administrative role in order to devote more time to teaching and research.

At my request he has agreed to continue serving as chair until such time as a new chair is named and installed.

Bob has had a remarkable run as department chair, overseeing a steady expansion of the department’s teaching and research programs. He has in particular strengthened the EPI department’s activities in the area of infectious diseases. He has personally played and continues to play a national and international leadership role in efforts to combat multi-drug resistant tuberculosis and to develop improved TB treatment regimens.

In addition to serving as department chair, Bob served a very effective term as Director of the School’s CDC-funded Prevention Research Center which is a partnership with the Boston Housing Authority, the Boston Public Health Commission and the Community Committee of public housing residents. He has also served as convener of the SPH department chairs’ group and has been a persistent advocate for increased diversity at BUSPH.

I will be meeting with the faculty of the Department of Epidemiology on May 7th to discuss the process for identifying a new permanent chair, at which time I plan to recommend a national search. If the department endorses that approach I hope to promptly construct a search committee and name a search committee chair so that the position can be posted by this summer and the vetting of candidates can be underway by the fall.

Bob Meenan
