I believe the Faculty Senate has a very important role to play in discussing issues that affect the faculty, representing faculty interests and views to the administration, and making decisions that foster a supportive environment for all faculty and staff at the SPH. In the next few years, the school is likely to face important choices in terms of curriculum priorities, collaboration with other institutions, and how to effectively teach and advise increasing numbers of students. If elected to serve as an at-large member, I would do my best to represent faculty interests in Senate discussions and activities and to work with Senate members, along with the broader community of faculty and staff, to help make the SPH an even more effective and enjoyable place to work for all of us.

I wish to be a candidate for at-large member of the Boston University School of Public Health Faculty Senate. I have been on the faculty for over twenty years, largely as a researcher, but also involved in teaching, advising students, and serving on committees. I understand the school in the context of its history and it is exciting to see its growth and blossoming over the years. Yet it is critical to continue to have broad and meaningful representation of the faculties’ academic and professional concerns and values. Academic institutions for public health have a special role in our society and they must strive to foster independent and innovative thinking and activities. Faculty play a fundamental role in this and it is critical that school policies and the working environment reflect the values and interests of the faculty. I am very familiar with the Faculty Senate, having served on it for the past two years as a department representative. As an at large member, I will continue to reach out to our faculty members and staff, and work to represent their interests in helping form school policies, in collaboration with the Dean and Governing Council. The Faculty Senate has been and can continue to be an effective voice for faculty and staff in making the Boston University School of Public Health both a good environment to work in and a successful and growing institution.

I have previously served on the Senate and continue to regularly attend the meetings as a guest. I am currently an SPH Rep on the University’s Faculty Council, and as such could serve as liaison between the two bodies. I continue to believe that the Faculty Senate is the venue where matters of concern to Faculty can be discussed from our point of view, especially relating to life-work balance, quality of life for faculty (especially junior faculty) and the appropriate role for senior (and very senior) faculty, such as myself in a changed academic landscape.

I am running as a candidate for an at-large seat on the Faculty Senate. I joined the Community Health Sciences Department full-time in summer 2011 as a Clinical Assistant Professor, but have been teaching in some capacity in the Social and Behavioral Sciences curriculum since 2003. In addition to teaching introductory and upper-level courses in the SB curriculum, I teach in the Epidemiology Department (Introduction to Epidemiology). My research focus is on food access initiatives for low-income populations and environmental strategies for addressing childhood obesity. My dissertation was an evaluation of a school-based program that offered healthy alternatives to school lunch meals for low-income children. My work at Abt Associates has entailed evaluations of federal programs that address food insecurity in at-risk populations or community-based prevention programs for obesity with the purpose of issuing recommendations or lessons learned. I received my DSc in Epidemiology and MPH in Social and Behavioral Sciences, both from BUSPH.

I serve on other school-wide committees, most to enhance the learning and practice-based experience for the students. I am running for Faculty Senate to be actively involved in initiatives that maintain and improve faculty quality of life through professional development opportunities and administrative procedures; enhance learning opportunities for students through a multi-disciplinary perspective; and, represent the perspective of the Clinical track for development opportunities in research, practice, and teaching. I would be honored to contribute to the collective voice of the faculty by serving on the Faculty Senate.
