Transition to the American Express PCard

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is Boston University switching from a GE MasterCard PCard to an American Express PCard program?

Boston University currently uses General Electric’s PCard. Due to GE’s decision to exit the purchasing card business, we took this opportunity to explore the marketplace and went out to bid with five major suppliers. BU has chosen American Express as our preferred PCard supplier.

I already have a GE PCard. Do I need to apply for an American Express PCard?

No. All open GE cards will be replaced with American Express PCards.

When will I receive my new American Express PCard?

At this time we expect cards will be mailed by American Express directly to cardholders the week of March 16, 2009. Cards will be mailed to the University business address for each cardholder.

What if I don’t receive my new card?

Contact the PCard Group if you have not received your American Express PCard by March 25, 2009.

Once I receive my new American Express card, how do I activate it?

To activate your card, call the telephone number printed on the sticker on the front of the American Express PCard. *** When prompted for the last four digits of your social security number, please give the last four digits of your Boston University identification number. ***

What should I do with my GE PCard after I receive the American Express PCard?

All GE issued PCards will be automatically deactivated March 27, 2009. Return the GE card to your PCard Approver. The Approver should destroy all GE cards for which they are responsible.

Using the American Express PCard

Where can I use the American Express PCard?

The American Express PCard is widely accepted by millions of merchants worldwide. 96% of all transactions made by BU employees on their current PCard will easily be transferred to an American Express PCard. For the remaining transactions, American Express will work with card holders and our merchants over the next several months to enroll additional BU suppliers in the American Express program.

I know that one of my vendors I use often does not accept the American Express PCard. I want to continue doing business with him. Who do I contact?

For now, direct this information to the PCard Transition Team (pcard@bu.edu).
