Alpha Kappa Delta
Alpha Kappa Delta (AKD) is the international sociology honor society, founded in 1920, with more than 400 chapters worldwide.  Each year the Boston University chapter (Gamma of Massachusetts) invites juniors and seniors of high scholarly achievement in Sociology to be inducted into Alpha Kappa Delta.

Membership allows students to participate in national undergraduate research paper competitions, to receive support for travel to professional meetings, and to receive the Society’s journal Sociological Inquiry.

Students are eligible for AKD upon completing six sociology courses toward their major (or minor), including SO 201 and SO 203, maintaining a GPA in sociology of at least 3.50 and an overall GPA of at least 3.00.

Diedre H. Symington Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded annually to one or more juniors or seniors concentrating in sociology. The recipients are nominated by the faculty of the department on the basis of academic accomplishments and financial need.

American Sociological Association Honors Program
The Honors Program provides undergraduate sociology students a rich introduction to the professional life of the discipline. Exceptional sociology students from throughout the country and the world come together for four days and experience all facets of the ASA annual meetings.  Applications will be due in February, 2009, for the summer meeting in San Francisco.  For more information visit the ASA Honors website.

ASA Departmental Prizes
In recognition of outstanding achievement in the major the Department of Sociology joins with the American Sociological Association to award ASA Departmental Prizes to outstanding seniors. Prize winners are selected on the basis of GPA in the major and faculty recommendations for excellence in sociology coursework. Prize winners are honored at the senior graduation ceremony and receive a one-year student membership in the ASA and a one-year subscription to an ASA professional journal.
