PROF. BENJAMIN CO-HOSTS ‘EDUCATION UNDER FIRE’ FILM SCREENING AND DISCUSSION ON BU’S HISTORY OF HUMAN RIGHTS ACTIVISM

On Nov.15th Prof. Ruha Benjamin addressed over 450 students about BU’s history of human rights activism as part of the “Education Under Fire” film screening and panel discussion with human rights activist and actor Rainn Wilson, Amnesty International’s Northeast Regional Director, Josh Rubenstein, film director Jeff Kaufman, and adjunct professor of social work, Mojdeh Rohani. Prof. Benjamin, who helped organize and moderate the event, tied BU’s recognition of Iran’s grassroots university, the Bahá’í Institute of Higher Education (BIHE), to a longer history of BU supporting subordinated social groups’ right to education. PROFESSOR RUHA BENJAMIN TO HOLD TALK ON ETHNORACIAL DIVERISTY AND PUBLIC HEALTH

Dr. Ruha Benjamin, Boston University Assistant Professor of Sociology and African American Studies, will be holding a talk today, May 11th 2011 entitled, “From Lab to Village: Mapping & Marketing Ethnoracial Diversity to Personalize Public Health.”

The lecture will take place at the Crosstown Center Building on the Boston University Medical Campus, 801 Massachusetts Avenue, Room 460, Boston, MA 02118.

The event is sponsored by the Boston University School of Public Health. Please bring your lunch, refreshments will be served!

NEW FACULTY MEMBERS TO JOIN DEPARTMENT

The Department is thrilled to announce the impending appointments of three new faculty members.  Joining us from University of Texas-Austin will be Catherine Connell, whose research and teaching focus on the Sociology of Sexualities.  Ruha Benjamin will join both the Sociology department and the African American Studies program.  She is currently completing a post-doc at UCLA, extending the work she did at UC Berkeley on the intersection of race, science, and medicine.  Finally, Japonica Brown-Saracino, who focuses on urban sociology, will be joining us from the University of Loyola Chicago.
