BIO AND RESEARCH
I received my Bachelor’s degree from the University of Southern Mississippi in Sociology in 2005 (minored in English) and I received my Master’s degree from the University of North Carolina-Greensboro (2009). My research interests, broadly, are: sociology of culture, subcultures, sociology of music, identity, and religion. My master’s thesis focused on a music subculture called Taqwacore (Muslim American punk rock). I intend to continue studying Taqwacore, specifically looking at women involved Taqwacore, the role of Islam (as both religion and culture), and a more in-depth ethnographic study of Taqwacore.
