BIO AND RESEARCH
Dr. Patricia Rieker, a medical sociologist, is an adjunct Professor of Sociology, specializing in the effects of gender and other social determinants of population health. Prior to coming to Boston University, Dr. Rieker was a Professor of Sociology and the Director of the Society and Health Program at Simmons College, and before that the Director of Psychosocial Research at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute. She also has a position of an Associate Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, where she still teaches on occasion. She recently published a book (with Chloe E. Bird) "Gender and Health: The Effects of Constrained Choices and Social Policies" that synthesizes social and biological explanations of gender differences in health both in the United States and cross-nationally.  In addition, she writes and teaches about evaluation of public health interventions and consults with the Centers for Disease Control.
