Sociology is the study of interpersonal and group aspects of human behavior. Its subject matter ranges from the family to the state, from crime to religion, from work to health, from the divisions of race and social class to the shared beliefs of culture, from stability to revolution and social change.


The Department of Sociology at Boston University offers intensive study at the Bachelors, Masters, and Doctoral levels. Our faculty enjoy international reputations and specialize in various areas of sociological research, including ethnomethodology, political sociology, theory, comparative and historical sociology, deviance, the family, urban studies, race & ethnicity, formal organizations, the non-profit sector, work, law, medical sociology, religion, cultural sociology, and the sociology of knowledge.


The department's intellectual activity and research programs are further enhanced through contact and exchange with various research centers, institutes, and departments at Boston University, including the Institute on Culture, Religion and World Affairs; the Institute on Race and Social Division; the African Studies Center; the International History Institute; and the Institute for the Study of Conflict, Ideology, and Policy, among many others at the university.
