Objectives:

To determine whether vasectomy in young men is associated with subsequent increased risk of nonfatal myocardial infarction.

To examine other risk factors for nonfatal myocardial infarction in young men.

Methods:

Cases of acute first episode of myocardial infarction in men under the age of 55 were ascertained by weekly telephone calls to the coronary care units of 78 collaborating hospitals in Eastern Massachusetts and Southern Connecticut . Locally stationed nurse-interviewers interviewed cases and hospital controls. They obtained data on general characteristics, history of vasectomy, smoking history and presence of other risk factors for myocardial infarction.

Results:

Vasectomy was not associated with the risk of myocardial infarction.
