Research Interests:

Dr. Louik's research has involved exposures during pregnancy that may affect the risk of fetal malformations. This interest predated her doctoral degree, and upon completion of her dissertation, was pleased to have the opportunity to join the staff of the SEC Birth Defects Study. In this role, Dr. Louik has participated in studies of medications in relation to a wide range of specific birth defects. She has also explored ways of assessing occupational exposures in the context of her case-control surveillance system. Most recently, Dr. Louik has been engaged in examining patterns of use of herbal treatments among pregnant women and their potential effects on fetal development. Another research interest of Dr. Louik's is the development of new methods for post-marketing surveillance of prescription medications.
