Alcohol and Other Drug Programs

Program Instructions

On this page you will find instructions on how to participate in various alcohol and other drug related services offered through Boston University’s Student Health Services.

Please Note: These services are free for eligible students at Boston University and are NOT available to students for the purpose of completing a court mandated requirement. Paperwork cannot be provided for this purpose.

To complete an Alcohol Education Class follow these steps:

All classes are 90 minutes, are held in FitRec, and require that you be there at the start time.

Sign up:

  1. Choose a first, second and third choice of dates and times to participate in the class from the schedule below.

  2. Email the 3 dates and times to edouglas@bu.edu. Make sure to put “Alcohol Education Class” as the Subject Line of your email and include your phone number and email address in the body.

  3. You will receive an email confirmation back within 72 hours (not including weekends) with what class you have been placed in based upon class availability and your preferences.

  4. If you need to cancel or change the class you have been assigned to you must email edouglas@bu.edu to do so. We request a 24 hour notice to cancel or reschedule your class.

Please note: You must be placed into a class and cannot show up to one of the times from the schedule without having gone through the sign-up process.

Complete e-CHUG and send an electronic verification to the referring office within 7 days of completing the class. Instructions will be handed out on how to send the verification in class.

To complete BASICS, schedule a Substance Use Assessment or any Substance-Related Intervention required by Boston University other than an alcohol education class, please follow the directions below:

  1. Schedule an Appointment:
  2. Please call Behavioral Medicine at (617) 353-3569 during business hours (9a.m.-5p.m. Monday through Friday).

    If you are required to schedule this appointment please have your letter with you when you call and specify that you need to complete a substance related intervention and which office referred you. 

  3. Arrive 15 minutes prior to your appointment start time in order to check-in and fill out an an intake packet.

  4. When you arrive use your Terrier ID card to swipe in at the Check-In Kiosk.  Then complete one of the packets located in the holder by the Kiosk marked “for AOD referrals”. 

    If you are required by Boston University to complete a substance-related intervention, like BASICS or a Substance Use Assessment, Please Note: All interventions typically consist of 2 fifty minute meetings. The initial appointment and second appointment are usually set 2 weeks apart. You are responsible for setting up your initial appointment in a timely manner to ensure that you meet the requirements of the referring office.

  5. Where to go: Student Health Services at 881 Commonwealth Avenue, West Entrance (corner of Buick Street and Commonwealth Avenue).
