General Questions

What is AlcoholEdu for College®?

AlcoholEdu for College® is an evidence-based course designed to educate students about risky drinking and its effects. AlcoholEdu is confidential and non-judgmental and is a key part of Boston University’s comprehensive alcohol prevention program.

AlcoholEdu for College® was created by Everfi and incorporates the latest evidence-based prevention methods to empower students to make well-informed decisions about alcohol, prepare them to respond to risky drinking situations, and help them reach their personal and academic goals. It’s not a “just say no” program, rather, it’s a highly personalized and interactive course designed to provide students with the skills for handling dangerous drinking situations and preventing personal harms like blackouts, drunk driving, and sexual violence.

Who is required to complete AlcoholEdu for College?

Boston University requires all incoming 1st-year students (freshmen) to complete Part 1 and Part 2 of AlcoholEdu with a passing score of 70% on the exam. Part 1 must be completed before students arrive on campus. Part 2 is completed in mid-September.

Why do I have to take AlcoholEdu?

Dangerous drinking by some students is an issue that affects nearly every college campus in the country. Many 1st-year students choose not to drink, but will still be exposed to the misuse of alcohol.

Whether you decide to drink in college or not, AlcoholEdu is worth your time. The course will empower you to make well-informed decisions about alcohol, prepare you to respond to risky drinking situations, and help you reach your personal and academic goals.

I’m a non-drinker. Why do I have to take this course?

AlcoholEdu is part of Boston University’s comprehensive alcohol prevention program and provides the incoming first-year class with foundational knowledge and skills regarding alcohol-related issues.

Even if you cannot (or choose not) to drink in college, you will likely still be exposed to the misuse of alcohol. The course tailors its materials to non-drinkers and includes skills for intervening in dangerous drinking situations (i.e. drinking and driving, medical emergencies).

Part 2 of the program takes approximately 30 minutes to complete. You can also take this section in multiple sittings. There is no passing score requirement for Part 2 of AlcoholEdu.

When do I need to complete the course by?

Part 1 of the course must be completed before students arrive on campus.

Part 2 of the course occurs in mid-September and has a deadline of October 13th 2014. After classes have started, students will receive an email prompting them to return to the course and complete Part 2.
