Staff Psychiatrist

Behavioral Medicine, Gender Affirming Healthcare Committee

My approach to providing care begins with my belief that psychiatry involves a knowledge base of medical issues, diagnoses, psychopharmacology and psychological issues applied in a collaborative manner with a student who is seeking help or information about an issue.  My practice is to ask new students what their goal is for our first meeting, to have them leave the session feeling heard and understood. As a transplant from Texas, where I attended college and medical school, who came to Boston for my residencies in adult and then child psychiatry, I have attempted to remain aware of the impact of the different cultures and lived experiences which students bring to the BU campus.  In addition to my interest in Latinx/social justice issues, I am involved with many aspects of the LGBTQI+ culture as well. I have practiced psychiatry in the Boston area for many years, working in outpatient, residential and inpatient settings.  Prior to coming to BU, I worked mostly in community psychiatry settings, including being Medical Director of Child Psychiatry at Boston Medical Center.  In addition to working full time, year-round in the BU Student Health Center, on both the Charles River and Medical campuses, I am currently on staff of one of the local Harvard teaching hospitals.  🌈
