How do I search?

Activity #1: Choose and use a search level.

Perform an advanced search using Boolean logic (and, or, not).

Choose a database relevant to your research interest or question and link two search words or terms using Boolean logic. Print out the first page of the results of your search.

Activity #2: Use effective search word(s)

Use search terms from a search result (e.g., the descriptors or subjects listed at the end of an abstract and key words found in other fields of a journal article (title, author, key words in abstract.)

Go to a database and click on the thesaurus. Enter a search word that is relevant to your research interest or question. Choose one search word or term and perform the search in the basic or advanced screen. From the search results, choose one entry and record three new search terms that you find from the subjects or descriptors, the abstract, or the title of the citation.

Activity #3: Limit your search

Limit the search by language and/or document type.
