Freshman Pre-placement Program
Each May, Work-Study supervisors are invited to participate in the Freshman Pre-placement Program.
The program enables us to place freshmen with Work-Study awards in jobs before they arrive on campus, and to give supervisors assurance of Work-Study support without having to interview students or submit hiring paperwork.
Work-Study staff pre-places between five and six hundred students each year.
The pre-placement program is very successful for closely-supervised entry-level jobs with flexible schedules. Because many freshmen have limited work experience, pre-placement jobs are usually grades 1, 2, or 3.
Supervisors who have requested that students be pre-placed with their departments are expected to hold those positions open for pre-placed students. Work-Study attempts to fill as many supervisor requests as possible, based on the number of students who request pre-placement and their interests and work experience.
In August, we send a confirmation of pre-placements to supervisors, payroll coordinators, and students. Pre-placed students are instructed to contact their supervisors prior to or during the first week of fall classes. At that time, supervisors should set up students’ work schedules and begin orientation and training.
Note: The Freshmen Pre-placement Program does not allow supervisors to interview students. We place students based on the requirements of the job and students’ preferences, work experience, and skills.
