Mason Elementary School
150 Norfolk Avenue
Roxbury, MA 02119
Mason is a pilot school that employs an immersion approach in serving the needs of students who are identified as learning disabled. As a result, BUILD tutors have the opportunity to work with students who are performing below grade level, as well as those performing above it.
The Mason School is unique in that each classroom has a teacher dually certified in regular and special education, as well as a paraprofessional. BUILD supports in-school tutoring Monday through Friday.
Tutors are assigned to kindergarten through fifth grade classrooms, where they work primarily during the morning literacy block. They run guided reading groups, assist during writers’ and readers’ workshops, and provide one-on-one attention to students.
Hours: 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. (travel time not included)
In the structured after-school program, tutors provide literacy support and some homework assistance to students in grades K-5. BUILD tutors collaborate with staff on daily literacy activities. This after-school program also includes math tutoring through America Counts.
Hours: 2:00 p.m. – 5:30 p.m. (travel time included)
