After School      

The Burke Complex houses four elementary schools. BUILD tutors work in the afterschool program on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m.. Tutors are assigned to first- through fourth-grade classrooms and work alongside teachers with small groups of children who need additional literacy support.. BUILD provides transportation to this site on all three days of operation.

In School and After School 

The Early Learning Center (ELC) serves pre-kindergarten through firstgrade children. One teacher and one paraprofessional direct each classrooms. BUILD provides in-school and after-school services Monday through Friday. Tutors work under the direct supervision of individual teachers and aid students in reading and writing. BUILD operates an in-school tutoring program Monday through Friday at the Farragut School . Tutors are placed in classrooms to assist teachers with students in kindergarten through fifth grade. They work primarily during the morning literacy block, running small group reading circles, assisting with reading/writing assignments, and working one-on-one with students needing additional academic support.

BUILD participates in Hamilton 's after school program, serving kindergarten to fifth-grade students. This program is run by the YMCA Monday through Friday. The BUILD tutors offer homework assistance, implement literacy games, help with journal writing, and read with the children.

BUILD operates an in-school tutoring program Monday through Friday at the Mason School. Tutors are assigned to kindergarten through fifth-grade classrooms where they work primarily during the morning literacy block. This school is unique in that each classroom consists of a teacher, dually certified in regular and special education, as well as a paraprofessional. Tutors run guided reading groups, assist during writer's and reader's workshops, and provide one-on-one attention to students. At the Mason School, BUILD tutors work with students who are identified as requiring additional reading assistance, as well as with students who are performing above grade level in reading.

 

After School

This structured program utilizes tutors to provide literacy support and some homework assistance to students in grades K-5. BUILD tutors collaborate with the staff to initiate daily literacy activities. The Mason School is a pilot school that employs an immersion approach in serving the needs of students who are identified as learning disabled. As a result, BUILD tutors will have the opportunity to work with students who are performing below grade level, as well as those who are performing above.

At the Reach Out And Read (ROR) site, BUILD tutors read with children who are waiting for medical appointments. Tutors may read with children individually or alongside their parents or other family members. BUILD provides tutors to the pediatric clinic throughout the day Monday through Friday.

    Tobin Elementary School

BUILD operates an in-school tutoring program at the Tobin School Monday through Friday. Tutors work with students under the supervision of classroom teachers. Tutors typically work one-on-one with students using a read-aloud tutoring method focusing on developing students' comprehension skills. Many students are learning English as a second language.

 

After School

The Tobin After School program operates Mondays through Friday BUILD tutors are referred to commonly as "Mentors" which reflects the nature and closeness of the relationships fostered among the tutors, staff members, and the small groups of students. The program focuses on reinforcing and supplementing the students' literacy skills. Tutors with Tobin AS are expected to devote extra time to the development of literacy activities and games, which they will share with students and staff alike. Tobin After School has a very diverse student body, including a number of students who speak English as a second language.

After School

  Trotter after-school operates Monday through Friday from 2:00-5:30 pm. Tutors provide classroom support during the last hour of the school day. During this “power hour”, from 2:30-3:30, tutors provide small-group as well as one-on-one assistance to students who need help with reading and writing activities. From 3:30-5:00, tutors work with a group of approximately 10 students assisting with homework and engaging the students in literacy games.

 

In School

  Trotter in-school operates Monday through Thursday from 8:00-11:00 am. Tutors are placed in second and third grade classrooms and assist the teachers during their literacy block. The tutors work with both small groups and individual children on reading fluency and reading comprehension skills.

Tutors work during the morning literacy blockand are typically assigned to one or two students at a time. The Winship has a special focus on math and science and it is the only BUILD site where tutors also provide math tutoring through America Counts.
