In School and After School

The Early Learning Center (ELC) serves pre-kindergarten through second grade children. One teacher and one paraprofessional direct each of ELC’s six classrooms.

BUILD provides in-school and after-school services Monday through Friday. Tutors work under the direct supervision of individual teachers and aid students in reading and writing. Tutors assist with journal writing, reading aloud, and phonics drills. They also facilitate students’ work at literacy centers.

Hours: 8 a.m. – 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. – 4:45 p.m. (travel time not included)


Directions: Take the B or C line to Washington Street.

  • From Commonwealth Avenue — walk down Washington Street toward Beacon Street and Whole Foods market.
  • From Beacon Street — walk up Washington Street toward Commonwealth Avenue.

After School

BUILD participates in Edison’s after school program, serving kindergarten to fifth grade students. This program runs Monday through Friday.

BUILD tutors offer homework assistance, implement literacy games, help with journal writing, and read with the children.

Hours: 2:00 p.m. – 6 p.m. (travel time not included)

After school

The after-school program serves students in kindergarten through sixth grade. Tutors work in one of two classes, reading with small groups and with children individually, helping with homework and leading literacy games. This program is Monday through Thursday. BUILD tutors also provide math tutoring through America Counts at this site.

Hours: 3:30 p.m.- 6:00 p.m. (travel time not included)


Directions: Take the BU Shuttle to the Medical Campus. Walk back on Albany Street toward Massachusetts Avenue. Before Mass Ave, turn right on E. Concord Street, then left on Washington, and right on Worchester Street.

After School

The Jackson-Mann after-school program operates Monday through Thursday and serves second through fifth grade students who are identified as needing additional support in reading.

BUILD tutors are an essential part of the program providing homework assistance and directing literacy activities such as reading circles, journal writing, and poetry workshops. BUILD tutors also provide math tutoring through America Counts at this site.

Hours: 2:30 p.m. – 5 p.m. (travel time not included)

Mason is a pilot school that employs an immersion approach in serving the needs of students who are identified as learning disabled. As a result, BUILD tutors have the opportunity to work with students who are performing below grade level, as well as those performing above it.

In School

The Mason School is unique in that each classroom has a teacher dually certified in regular and special education, as well as a paraprofessional. BUILD supports in-school tutoring Monday through Friday.

Tutors are assigned to kindergarten through fifth grade classrooms, where they work primarily during the morning literacy block. They run guided reading groups, assist during writers’ and readers’ workshops, and provide one-on-one attention to students.

Hours: 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. (travel time not included)

After School

In the structured after-school program, tutors provide literacy support and some homework assistance to students in grades K-5. BUILD tutors collaborate with staff on daily literacy activities. This after-school program also includes math tutoring through America Counts.

Hours: 2:00 p.m. – 5:30 p.m. (travel time included)


Directions: Take the BU Shuttle to the Boston Medical Center and then take the number 8 bus to 1010 Massachusetts Avenue/Magazine Street.

A Zipcar is provided for after-school tutors.

BUILD operates an in-school tutoring program at the Tobin School Monday through Friday. Tutors work with students with guidance from classroom teachers. Many students are English language learners.

Tutors typically work one-on-one with students using a read-aloud tutoring method focused on developing comprehension skills. BUILD tutors also provide math tutoring through America Counts at this site.

Hours: 9:45 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. (travel time not included)

After School

The Tobin After School program operates Monday through Friday. Tobin After School has a very diverse student body, including a number of students who are English Language Learners.

BUILD tutors are commonly referred to as “Mentors,” reflecting the nature and closeness of the relationships fostered between each staff member and the small group of 2-4 children with whom he or she works each week. Tutors are expected to devote extra time to the development of literacy activities and games, which they share with both students and staff.

Tutors are placed in second- and third-grade classrooms and assist teachers during the literacy block. Tutors work with both small groups and individual children on reading fluency and reading comprehension skills.

After School

Trotter’s after-school program operates Monday through Friday.

Tutors provide classroom support during the last hour of the school day. During this “power hour,” from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m., tutors assist small groups or individual students who need help with reading and writing activities. From 3:30 to 5 p.m., tutors work with a group of students, assisting with homework and engaging them in literacy games.

Hours: 2 p.m. – 5:30 p.m. (travel time included)
