Tax Exempt Information for International Students

International students may not claim exempt using a W-4 form. International students whose countries have a qualifying tax treaty (click here to view the list) must complete a tax treaty packet (Form 8233, data sheet and treaty letter) in order to claim exempt.

If you claimed exempt from federal and state income taxes during the 2006 calendar year and wish to claim that exemption again in 2007 you must complete a new tax treaty packet for 2007.

Students wishing to complete a tax treaty packet must come into the Student Payroll Office (881 Commonwealth Avenue 2nd floor) to complete the packet. Whether renewing a previous exemption or filing a treaty packet for the first time students are required to bring their passport, I-94, visa (except students from Canada) and I-20 or DS-2019 with them. No treaty packet will be accepted without these documents.

You will have taxes withheld until a 2007 treaty packet, has been approved by the Internal Revenue Service. It takes approximately two weeks for a packet to be approved.
