Work-Study
Currently Boston University employs over 3,000 students
through the Federal Work-Study Program. Work-Study is
a financial aid program funded by the federal government
and administered by Boston University. The program is
designed to promote access to employment opportunities
for eligible students and to assist students in meeting
their educational expenses. Work-Study students are
employed either on-campus, at the various schools and
colleges located throughout the University, or off campus
at non-profit, incorporated organizations.
The Work-Study staff is available to assist both
students and supervisors with any Work-Study related
questions and issues. Students may contact the Work-Study
Manager to request assistance in their job search,
to discuss on-the-job issues, or to resolve other
Work-Study related problems. Supervisors are encouraged
to contact the Work-Study Manager with any questions,
concerns, or requests for assistance in meeting their
student staffing needs. The Work-Study Manager is
also available to work with supervisors on student
conduct and/or performance issues.
Students may find additional Work-Study program information
in the Work-Study
Student Handbook, and supervisors may consult
the Supervisors
Handbook for Work-Study and Student Employees
for additional program information. Off-campus Work-Study
information is available in the Guide
to Off-Campus Work-Study Employment (for students)
and the Supervisor
Handbook for Off-Campus FWS Employers (for supervisors).
The Work-Study Manager presents
two training sessions per year about Work-Study program
procedures. The Work-Study Manager and Student Job
Service Manager jointly present two workshops per
year about training and supervising student workers.
The Work-Study Manager is also available to train
supervisors on an individual basis upon request.

Student
Job Service (Non-Work-Study)
The Student Job Service assists degree seeking students
in finding on- and off-campus employment to help meet
their educational expenses while attending Boston
University. The Student Job Service is a free listing
service offered to on-campus employers and to employers
throughout the Greater Boston metropolitan area.
The Part-Time and Summer Job listings include long-term,
part-time, and full-time summer work opportunities
and the Quickie Jobs are short-term job opportunities
that may last from 15 minutes up to one month.
Jobs listed
online with these services are password-protected
so that they are accessible only to Boston University
students with proper security clearance. Eligible
students may view Part-time and Summer Job listings
and contact employers directly. Students applying
for Quickie Jobs may view the job descriptions online,
but must come to the Student Employment Office to
obtain employer contact information.
Listings are posted at the
discretion of the Student Job Service. The Student
Job Service does not perform background checks on
listing employers or companies, nor does it endorse
or sanction any employer or company. Students are
advised to use good judgment when accepting a position.
Questions, concerns, or problems should be directed
to the Student Job Service Manager.

Student Payroll
The Student Payroll Office, under the direction of the
Payroll Manager and Assistant Payroll Manager, works
with the University community to ensure that all students
working at Boston University are paid in an accurate
and timely fashion. Only registered students at Boston
University are eligible to be paid as student employees.
The Student Payroll system is tied into both the Financial
Aid and Registrar systems, where information on a student's
current status is maintained.
The Student Payroll Office maintains personnel and
payroll history for students employed at Boston University.
University departments are responsible for submitting
hiring documents to the Student Payroll Office for
processing. Departments may pay students on an hourly,
monthly or piecemeal (one-time) basis. The Payroll
Manager and Assistant Manager work closely with the
International Students and Scholars Office, the University
Payroll Office and the Work-Study Office to ensure
that all federal and state regulations regarding payroll
are met for all students working on campus. The Student
Payroll Office also provides employment verification,
both past and present, for students employed at Boston
University.
The Assistant Payroll Manager presents workshops,
sponsored by the Office of Personnel, twice a year
for both the new and seasoned payroll coordinator.
The payroll staff will also provide one-on-one training
for all new payroll coordinators upon request. The
Student Payroll staff also acts as a resource for
payroll coordinators when supervisors and students
have payroll-related questions or problems. Payroll
coordinators may consult the Student Employment Payroll
Manual for more details regarding the student payroll
process. This manual is an excellent resource for
payroll coordinators and is given out at all training
sessions. To obtain a copy of the manual contact
us.
