Summer Literacy Institute

This annual, four-day seminar, led by Boston University Professor Lee Indrisano in collaboration with nationally recognized literacy experts, is designed for educators who are responsible for the literacy development of students in elementary, middle, and secondary school. This year’s focus will be on the role of classroom talk as a fundamental component of the literacy curriculum. Research has shown that the ways teachers structure classroom talk affects what and how deeply students learn. Classrooms rich in oral language strengthen students’ vocabulary and concept knowledge, reading comprehension, and writing. The program is designed to be both interactive and collaborative, with ample time allocated to conversations with presenters and participants about current research and theory and implications for instruction. Participants may elect to take the Seminar for 2 or four graduate credits or for 30 PDPs.
