BILINGUAL EDUCATION (ESL)

The English as a Second Language (ESL) program at Boston University helps our students prepare for a teaching career in a variety of classroom settings. Whether your goal is to become a teacher at the elementary, middle or high school level, our program offers a comprehensive course of study in curriculum development, educational issues, teaching methods, and literacy development.

The ESL undergraduate program, which leads to licensure for teachers of ESL for levels PreK-6 or 5-12, offers a strong liberal arts component with an emphasis on language and culture. Studies include English language and literature, professional development courses combining theory and practice, specialty development courses focusing on first- and second-language acquisition, literary instruction and assessment, and curriculum development. You have the opportunity to apply the theoretical concepts learned during your coursework in supervised field replacements. Placements are made in collaboration with various public school systems in the United States and abroad.

Students at the undergraduate level may also prepare to teach at the elementary level in French immersion or two-way bilingual programs. Students who select this option must complete the program in elementary education in addition to bilingual educational program requirements.
