Dean Charles Glenn

Dean ad interim Charles Glenn
As Dean ad interim of the Boston University School of Education, I have the honor of greeting you, a prospective student. If you are browsing our website, it is probably because you have a serious interest in the profession of education and feel called to the work of educating children, youths, or adults.

From birth, we accumulate debts to those who care for us and give us guidance and instruction. We repay those debts by caring for parents and elders who may grow dependent on us. We also repay what an earlier generation did for us by doing our best to serve others.

Every society makes some arrangement for the education of children and youth, and relies on educators who commit themselves to carrying this out with skill and dedication.

The School of Education works hard to find the right balance between accumulated knowledge of good educational practice and new research that extends this knowledge and asks how schools and other educational institutions can become more effective.

Our programs are based upon direct engagement with education at all levels and in many different forms, and this experience shapes our understanding of teaching and learning. Students come here from many countries and with many different professional goals, and this adds richness and excitement to our community.

Our distinguished and committed faculty teach with great competence. Members of our faculty have established a variety of strong programs in school and non-school settings. Among these are programs for intergenerational literacy, character education, early childhood education, teaching of English as a second language, and educational development around the world. We maintain partnerships with other divisions of the University, with public school systems, and with independent and international schools. Our students enjoy the cultural, civic, and historic advantages of our location in the heart of Boston, and many gain volunteer or paid experience that enriches their education.

We invite you to seek admission to our School of Education, to accept the challenges of the profession, and to honor the obligations to those who have gone before us by educating those who will follow.
