Secondary School Teaching

"Because of SED, I realized that I loved to teach. I have a masters degree +30 hours. I spent from 1972-1974 teaching mathematics at a private boarding school in Guadalajara, Mexico and then high school mathematics in Buffalo, New York, from 1975-1999. I was considered an exemplary mathematics teacher and was taken out of the classroom in 1999 to be a support teacher for other high school mathematics teachers. I held that position until 2003, when I decided that I missed being in a school, so I took a secondary assistant principal's position. I love what I do and at this point, and I do not plan to retire for at least three years. I am definitely grateful to SED to awakening the educator in me."

Boston University’s Mathematics Education program helps you develop expertise in fundamental mathematical concepts and processes, the development of mathematics curriculum materials, and teaching methods applicable to a variety of age levels, interests, and aptitudes.

Our program focuses on both the content and teaching of mathematics. As a graduate student, you may pursue the Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT), Master of Education (Ed.M.), Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study (CAGS), Master of Mathematics for Teaching (MMT), or Doctor of Education (Ed.D.).

Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT)
Boston University’s MAT Program is a 46-credit joint master’s degree that draws upon the rich resources of the entire University. You will complete four courses in Mathematics at the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences and study the classroom methods essential for fine teaching. Most students begin the MAT program in late June and complete 10 credits of graduate study in education and a classroom prepracticum over the summer.

Master of Education (Ed.M.) and Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study (CAGS)

The Ed.M. and CAGS are designed for teachers holding an Initial License who wish to expand their academic content base and teaching talents by becoming informed about the latest research, curricula, methodologies, and theories in mathematics education. Teachers on sabbatical leave and school systems with special needs are encouraged to inquire about specially designed sequences. A student in an Ed.M. or CAGS program may earn a professional license for classroom teaching with the appropriate preliminary experience while holding initial licensure. The professional license also requires as part of the program a supervised practicum at the professional licensure level.

The Ed.M. degree is designed for those who hold a license and wish to broaden their understanding of mathematics and mathematics education. The degree consists of 36 credits.

The CAGS is designed for those who hold a license and a master's degree and wish to further broaden their understanding of mathematics and mathematics education. The degree consists of a minimum of 32 credits and a comprehensive exam.

Required Courses for the Ed.M. Degree

SED RS 600   Perspectives on Inquiry
SED ME 558   Mathematics Curriculum: Programs, Issues, and Trends
SED ME 563   Problem Solving Laboratory
Four mathematics courses appropriate for the level taught
At least one methods of teaching mathematics course
One elective

Required Courses for the CAGS

SED ME 558   Mathematics Curriculum: Programs, Issues, and Trends
SED ME 563   Problem Solving Laboratory
At least one research course
Two-four mathematics courses appropriate for the level taught

Practicum
Boston University enjoys long-standing relationships with many inner city and suburban school systems in Greater Boston that offer our students rewarding field experiences under the guidance of expert teachers and faculty. The School of Education reserves the right to determine whether a student is fully prepared to enter any professional field experience. This would include passing the SED Literacy Test prior to starting the practicum.

Master of Mathematics for Teaching (MMT)
The MMT program is designed for exceptionally strong mathematicians within the mathematics teacher community who seek a content-rich experience of mathematics to strengthen their work in classrooms. The program helps our students prepare for leadership roles in developing mathematics curriculum and teacher training. The courses, which emphasize depth over breadth, are designed around mathematics for teaching and current research in mathematics education. Our MMT program requires 38 credits, including 18 credits from the School of Education and 20 credits from the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. You are encouraged to apply to the program if you hold an initial license for teaching mathematics and have taught a minimum of two years under that license.

The core of the program consists of three six-week summer programs of intensive study of mathematics and professional development:

  • The first summer focuses on an immersion experience in mathematics
  • The second summer broadens the immersion through a research experience in mathematics
  • The third summer centers on a field study in mathematics education

Doctor of Education (Ed.D.)
Our doctoral students prepare for leadership positions in school systems or postsecondary positions in junior, community, or technical colleges, and in teacher training colleges and universities.
