The Latin and Classical Humanities Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program at Boston University offers you a comprehensive course of study that leads to an initial teaching license in Latin and Classical Humanities for grades 5-12.

Boston University’s MAT Program is a 46 credit joint master’s degree that draws upon the rich resources of the entire University. You will complete four courses Latin and Classical Humanities in the Graduate School of Arts and at the same time study the classroom methods essential for fine teaching.

To enter the MAT program, you will need an undergraduate degree or an equivalent in classical studies, including a background in classical languages emphasizing Latin and/or Greek.

Most students begin the MAT program in late June and complete 10 credits of graduate study in education and a classroom prepracticum over the summer.

The fall semester consists of taking full-time master’s-level courses through the Classical Studies Department at the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. The spring semester includes a class in teaching methods, instruction in special education, and a three-month student-teaching experience supervised by a veteran classroom teacher and Boston University faculty. The graduation requirements for an MAT degree in Latin and Classical Humanities include a comprehensive exam in Latin. Our twelve-month program is approved for licensure in Massachusetts and 44 other states through reciprocity.
