The History and Social Science Education program prepares you for a variety of professional careers, ranging from classroom teachers to museum educators to social studies curriculum specialists. Boston University’s History and Social Science Education program reaches beyond the traditional mission of developing classroom history and social studies teachers to serve the many diverse professional goals of our students.
Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT)
Our candidates for the Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) degree program in History and Social Science come from many fine undergraduate institutions in the United States. The vast majority holds bachelor’s degrees in either history or political science. Most have thought about teaching during undergraduate school and decided to become middle (grades 5-9) or high school (grades 9-12) social studies teachers. Others have made unsatisfying career choices and now realize teaching was their true calling.
Whatever the reason, the MAT program at Boston University offers a truly wonderful opportunity to receive a first class academic and professional education in a first class city over one calendar year. Most of our master’s candidates begin their coursework in late June and graduate with Massachusetts’ certification in May. They usually begin their first year of teaching in September.
For full-time students, the MAT is a 12-month program leading to initial licensure for teaching at the middle, junior, or senior high school levels. The 46-credit program meets licensure requirements for Massachusetts, which has reciprocal licensure agreements with 44 other states.

Master of Education (Ed.M.) and Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study (CAGS)
Students pursuing the Ed.M. degree or CAGS prepare for leadership and curriculum development positions in history and social science education. Students must complete a minimum of 36 credits for the Ed.M. program, and a minimum of 32 credits for the CAGS program.
Doctor of Education (Ed.D.)
At the doctoral level, students plan individual courses of study for careers in curriculum development and publishing, college or university teaching, educational research, or supervisory/administrative responsibility in schools. For more information, please see the description of the Ed.D. in Curriculum and Teaching.

Practicum
Boston University enjoys long-standing relationships with many inner city and suburban school systems in Greater Boston that offer our students rewarding field experiences under the guidance of expert teachers and faculty. The School of Education reserves the right to determine whether a student is fully prepared to enter any professional field experience. This would include passing the SED Literacy Test prior starting the practicum.
