The Center for the Advancement of Ethics and Character (CAEC) and
The Institute for Athletic Coach Education
both at Boston University's School of Education

Workshop held in the School of Law building
765 Commonwealth Avenue

Participants of the CAEC Spring Institute, April 2004, engage in lively discussion.

Involvement in organized sports can have a deep, long-lasting impact on the character development of all participants.   Coaches, teachers, and parents share the responsibility of making it a positive experience for young athletes, by helping them to succeed not only on the field or in the gym, but in life as well.   This one-day workshop offers effective strategies for developing an athletic program grounded in commitment to character and performance excellence.

11:15-12:15 How Coaches Can Develop the Confidence of their Athletes
John McCarthy and Mike Luke, Institute for Athletic Coach Education
Athletes of all ages and levels of ability who have high self-confidence are more likely to be able to perform effectively, even when the going gets tough. Coaches have an influential role in fostering self-confidence, particularly in the case of young athletes who are undergoing physical, psychological and emotional changes. We will focus on the role that confidence plays in developing strong, resourceful performers and consider specific actions and coaching techniques to encourage the budding athlete.

12:15 -1:15 Luncheon
The Research on the Development of High Abilities: What Have We Learned?
Guest speaker: Leonard Zaichowsky, School of Education and School of Medicine, Boston University
Research has made it quite clear how young people achieve high abilities in sport, theatre, the arts, and science.   Yet many teachers and coaches engage in teaching and coaching practices that are counterproductive to the development of high abilities.   This presentation will highlight current research and make recommendations for best practices in working with children and adolescents in sport environments.

1:15 - 2:15 Winning the Game in Sports and Life
Richard Ginsburg and Stephen Durant, Massachusetts General Hospital and PACES (Performance and Character Excellence in Sports Institute)
Great performances are not based on talent alone. Understanding the psychological needs and developmental stages of children over time is an essential step in fostering great performance and a well-balanced life. Learn basic ways of helping children in age groups 6-12 and 13-18.

2:15 - 2:30 Q&A Session with Presenters, Evaluation, and Wrap-up
