Civic Ideals and Engagement in a Global Context, Dr. Charles White and Rumen Valchev
An overview of two international projects to promote civic ideals and engagement in the U.S., Russia, and Bulgaria. Curriculum materials will shared.

America’s Civic Values, Claire Griffin
Participants will discuss civic values essential for active citizenship; role-play scenarios which provide an opportunity to apply those values; and analyze five seminal documents reflecting those values.

Ethics in Intelligence Collection, Joe Wippl
Explore the ethical behavior of those who represent the United States and its citizens abroad.  What does the law say? How does the United States compare to our adversaries?   What is acceptable, what is not acceptable, and why?  Reflect on this topical theme, and get ideas for ways to introduce these topics with your students.

Weaving Global Citizenship Into the Fabric of a School, Carl Hobert

We have a unique opportunity to educate students in their formative years to become responsible and compassionate global citizens in our increasingly interdependent world. In this interactive workshop, participants will share effective ways of globalizing a school’s mission statement, and strategies to weave into their curricular fabrics: Mandarin and/or Arabic studies, international conflict management and prevention exercises, gap year possibilities and opportunities for valuable service learning programs in the US, Latin America, Africa and beyond.

Empathy, Care and Citizenship, Dr. Amy Baltzell
This workshop explores the importance of empathy and care, for self and others, in developing good citizens.  The relationship between moral action, mattering, autonomy and citizenship will be considered.

Building Personal and Collective Efficacy, Dr. John McCarthy

This workshop explores how personal and collective efficacy
precede a sense of agency to effectuate change and, thus, is a precursor to
developing engaged citizens.

Civic Engagement and Civic Virtue in the Classroom, Roger Desroisers and Ellen Barber-Morse
Project Citizen and We the People are two national projects designed to promote ethical civic engagement through both the study of foundational ideas of American government and the application of those ideas in civic participation.
