Application Fee
The $70 application fee is non-refundable and non-transferable. 

Boston University School of Education offers application fee waivers to Boston University employees and to U.S. military personnel and veterans.  To request an application fee waiver, please email sedgrad@bu.edu.

Applying to multiple programs
Applicants may apply to multiple programs for a given semester.  Applicants applying to multiple programs must submit individual applications (including the application forms, Statement of Qualifications & Objectives, and the application fee) for each program.  Applicants may share transcripts, standardized test scores, and letters of reference among all applications for a given semester.  Applicants may submit different letters of reference for each application if desired.

Final Decisions
All final decisions will be released to the applicant by letter.  Admissions decisions will not be released via phone, email, or fax. 

Under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), admissions decisions will only be released directly to the applicant. 

Reapplying
Applicants reapplying to a graduate program at Boston University School of Education within one year of a previous graduate application to Boston University School of Education may request that their application be reactivated.  To reactivate an application within one year, applicants should email sedgrad@bu.edu.  In addition, to reactivating the former application, applicants should submit the following new information. 

  1. Essay explaining how the applicant’s candidacy has changed and/or improved since the last application submission.
  2. Additional materials if applicable (i.e. official transcripts from new coursework, standardized test scores from a retake exam, new letters of reference, etc.).
  3. Statement of Qualifications and Objectives (only required if the applicant is applying to a different program than the original application).

Applicants reapplying after the one year period must submit a new application. 

Transferring Credits
Master’s and CAGS students may transfer up to 8 non-degree credits into the program.  Doctoral students may transfer up to 20 non-degree credits into the program.  Credits must be applicable.  Faculty advisors have final approval over which credits will be accepted and applied for a particular degree program.

Returning Application Materials
All application materials and supporting documents submitted to Boston University School of Education become the property of the School. We cannot return material to an applicant or forward any material to a third party outside the School.

Deferred Acceptance
Admission may be deferred, with permission, for up to one year. It is the candidate's responsibility to request such a deferral in writing directly to the Graduate Admissions Office.  Requests may be sent via email to sedgrad@bu.edu.  If the request is approved, it is the candidate’s responsibility to contact the Graduate Admissions Office to reactivate their admission prior to start of the semester in which the candidate plans to enroll. 
Students who are awarded financial assistance and choose to defer admission must reapply for financial assistance for the semester in which the student plans to enroll. 

Change of Contact Information
It is the responsibility of the applicant to notify the Graduate Admissions Office if personal contact information changes at any time during the application process.  Applicants must submit updated personal contact information via email to sedgrad@bu.edu

Dual Degree Programs
Boston University is pleased to announce two dual degree programs with the School of Education and the School of Social Work.  Students may enroll in the Ed.M. in Special Education/M.S.W. in Social Work dual degree program or the Ed.D. in Special Education/M.S.W. in Social Work dual degree program. 

Dual degree applicants must apply to and be accepted by each School separately.  Typically, applicants apply and enroll at one School and then apply to the other School after completing one semester.  Applicants may also apply to both programs at the same time. 

Students with Disabilities
The School of Education at Boston University is committed to equal access for students with disabilities and welcomes applications from qualified students with disabilities. Applicants who believe that a disability significantly influenced their GPA, standardized test scores, or other credentials are invited to include information regarding their disability in the personal statement or optional essay. It is not mandatory that applicants provide this information; however, if an applicant chooses to do so, it will be kept confidential.
