Is there a minimum TOEFL score requirement?
In order to ensure that all graduate students are able to fully engage in graduate study, the Faculty at the School of Education has established a minimum TOEFL requirement.  Most School of Education programs require a minimum TOEFL score of 80 on the iBT, 213 on the CBT, or 550 on the PBT. The TESOL program requires a minimum TOEFL score of 100 on the iBT, 250 on the CBT, or 600 on the PBT.  Applications with test scores below the minimum requirement for the given academic program will not be reviewed by the Admissions Committee.

Is there a minimum IELTS score requirement?
In order to ensure that all graduate students are able to fully engage in graduate study, the Faculty at the School of Education has established a minimum IELTS requirement.  Most School of Education programs require a minimum IELTS score of 6.5.  The TESOL program requires a minimum IELTS score of 7.0.  Applications with test scores below the minimum requirement for the given academic program will not be reviewed by the Admissions Committee.

Is there a minimum GRE score requirement?
Boston University School of Education does not have a minimum requirement for the GRE.  However, the average score is 522 for the Verbal section, 620 for the Quantitative section, and 5.0 for the Analytical Writing section.

Is there a minimum MAT score requirement?
Boston University School of Education does not have a minimum requirement for the MAT.  However, the average score is 420.

Is it better to take the GRE or MAT?
The Admissions Committee does not prefer one test over the other test.  Applicants are encouraged to take whichever exam they prefer.

If I already have a degree from Boston University, do I need to submit a Boston University transcript?
If you have earned a degree from Boston University or have taken classes at Boston University, you do not need to submit your Boston University transcript.  The Graduate Admissions Office will obtain your Boston University transcript and will include your transcript with your other application materials.

I am an international applicant.  When do I apply for my visa?
International applicants who have been accepted to the program will be required to submit documentation to the Graduate Admissions Office in order to start the visa process.  Accepted students will be required to submit the following documentation.

  • International Student Data Form
  • Financial documentation that demonstrates the ability to meet the minimum estimated expenses for one year of study at Boston University.
  • A letter of support from your sponsor (if applicable) which expresses the sponsor's willingness to support you financially for academic studies and living expenses throughout the course of your studies at Boston University.
  • Copies of relevant page(s) of your passport.
  • Copies of all previous immigration documents.
