Graduate Certificate in Teaching English as a Second Language: PreK-6

Boston University offers a series of 16-credit non-degree Graduate Certificate Programs at its School of Education, including the Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) Program for PreK-6. Our program prepares future teachers of English to young speakers of other languages, and it is most appropriate for teachers and administrators who hope to learn more about best practices for meeting the needs of an increasingly diverse student population.

Our curriculum is designed to provide our students with a deep understanding of effective instruction and assessment of young students whose primary language is a language other than English, and who are in the process of acquiring the language, literacy, and content-area skills necessary to participate in and benefit from instruction in English. Our program focuses on first- and second-language acquisition and linguistics, literacy instruction and assessment, culturally relevant pedagogy, curriculum development, and policy issues that influence assessment and instruction of bilingual learners.

We strive to assist our students in making their Graduate Certificate Programs align to each individual’s professional needs within the boundaries of their educational specialization. Our expert academic advisors are available to assist and guide students in modifying the traditional Program courses and instead take courses from any of the 16 schools and colleges within Boston University as well as cross-register at any of the universities belonging to the area consortium of institutions.

Our program:

  • Appeals to teachers and administrators hoping to learn more about best practices for TESOL without pursuing an additional degree at the present time.
  • Introduces students to basic theories and instructional practices for working with bilingual children.
  • Focuses on the additional factors that influence academic and social-emotional development for bilingual and immigrant children.
  • Individualizes the program to match each student’s professional goals with the assistance of knowledgeable academic advisors.
