MS Program

The Master of Science (MS) in SE is designed to provide advanced training in systems engineering for students focusing on a research oriented career in academia or industry. In order to streamline their studies, students have the option of specializing in one of seven concentrations:

  • Energy and Environmental Systems (new)
  • Computational and Systems Biology
  • Control Systems
  • Network Systems
  • Financial Engineering
  • Production and Service Systems
  • Operations Research

To receive the MS degree in Systems Engineering, a student must complete 32 credits, all of which must be at the 500 level or higher, and 20 credits of which must be structured courses. The structured course requirements are divided into two groups: Core (3 courses) and Concentration (2 courses). They may be chosen from the list on the Courses by Concentration page.   In addition, the student may choose either to do research with a SE faculty member and write a thesis, or complete a project one-on-one with a SE faculty member or in an approved class setting. The remaining required MS credit hours remain unstructured and can be chosen, with advisor approval, to meet an individual student’s academic and research needs.

Master of Science students must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.00 to remain in good academic standing and to graduate. All graduate courses are counted in the GPA. Grades of “C–” or lower are not acceptable for the MS degree.

The required coursework for the MS degree includes:

  • Core requirements. Three core courses in Systems Engineering.
  • Concentration requirements. Two courses from one of the concentration areas in Systems Engineering.
  • Advanced technical course requirementsAt least two 700 or higher level courses from the Systems Engineering concentration areas or approved by the Systems Engineering Graduate Committee in advance.
  • Thesis or project (4-8 credits). Research with a faculty member and write a thesis (a maximum of 8 credits), or complete a project one-on-one with a professor or in an approved class setting (4 credits).  Thesis students may enroll in ENG SE 901 for at least 4 but no more than 8 credits toward their MS degree.
