On March 1, 2011, the Program for Scripture and the Arts at Boston University will present the American premiere of Matti Kovler’s oratorio The Escape of Jonah.
This work of music theater retells the story of the biblical prophet Jonah from today’s point of view, bringing together the sounds of solo trumpet, nine-piece brass band, vocal ensemble and electronics. The concert will also include an additional work by Kovler: Here Comes Messiah!, for soprano and chamber ensemble. Featuring Reut Rivka, soprano, Ezra Weller, trumpet, New England Conservatory-based brass and chamber ensembles and the NEC Vocal Jazz Ensemble under Dave Devoe. A conversation with the composer and reception will follow.
Presented with support from the BU Humanities Foundation and the Jewish Cultural Endowment, and additional support from The Other Within, a Jewish Studies Faculty Initiative at BU. This performance is free and open to the public.
Location: College of Fine Arts Concert Hall, 855 Commonwealth Avenue
