In the Summer Issue 2008...

Learn about the Study of Transitions and Recovery Strategies (STARS) which is a mixed-methods, exploratory, longitudinal study of recovery among individuals with serious mental health problems. Study findings demonstrate the importance of a caring, collaborative partnership between consumer and provider to help facilitate recovery and improve quality of life.

Given the high rates of unemployment and underemployment among individuals with psychiatric disabilities, only a small number of studies have investigated the role work has in the lives of people who have been successful vocationally during their recovery from serious mental illness. This study sought to add to existing literature by determining how individuals perceive work and its effect on their recovery.

Integrating vocational services into public mental health services is a key component of evidence-based supported employment for people with serious severe mental illnesses. While this approach has been developed in the USA, it has only recently been attempted internationally and in Australia. This report summarizes the early implementation challenges at the first Australian demonstration site.
