Physician, Traumatic Brain Injury Survivor to Speak at BU Sargent College Commencement
Wednesday, May 10, 2006
(Boston) – Dr, Claudia Osborn, associate clinical professor of internal medicine at Michigan State University who is widely known for her work with traumatic brain injury, will deliver the keynote address at the Boston University Sargent College of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences commencement ceremony on Sunday, May 14.
Osborn, who sustained a traumatic brain injury following an accident where her bicycle was hit by a car, will speak to both undergraduate and graduate students about both her personal and professional experience with “treating the whole individual.” With her service dog, Micah Matisse always by her side, she travels extensively to lecture about what living with a brain injury means to the survivor; to the family and significant other; and to the rehabilitation professional.
“We are pleased to welcome Dr. Osborn to our commencement ceremony; our hope is that her experience and vision will inspire our graduates as they enter various health and rehabilitation sciences fields,” said Gloria Waters, Ph.D., dean of BU Sargent College.
Osborn is also the author of a book entitled, Over My Head that recounts her personal experience with traumatic brain injury. In addition, she advises the Center for Disease Control in Atlanta, the National Institutes of Health in Washington DC, and the Michigan Department of Health on TBI education and prevention. And, in 2001, she was honored for her contribution to mental health by Psychology Today.
The BU Sargent College Commencement Ceremony will be held on Sunday, May 14 at 2:30 p.m. in the tent behind the Tsai Auditorium at 685 Commonwealth Avenue.
