NATIONAL MENTAL HEALTH LEADER TO SPEAK AT BOSTON UNIVERSITY

Boston --- Dr. Michael F. Hogan, chair of the President’s new Freedom Commission on Mental Health and director of the Ohio Department of Mental Health, will discuss mental health policy and identify factors which make it effective and relevant on Wednesday, October 16, 2002 at 5 p.m. at Boston University’s Sargent College of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences, 635 Commonwealth Avenue, Boston, MA, Room 101.

His talk is entitled "Perspectives on Mental Health: Science, Services, or Recovery?"

President Bush appointed Dr. Hogan chair of his new Freedom Commission on Mental Health on April 29, 2002. The President recognized Hogan as “a leader in this profession” and acknowledged the depth of Hogan’s 26 years of experience as a mental health official in Massachusetts, Connecticut, and currently, Ohio. As the present director of the Ohio Department of Mental Health, Dr. Hogan has led the state through a dramatic period of reform since he was first appointed in 1991.

Dr. Hogan served in the Massachusetts Department of Mental Health from 1976 to 1984. While there, he developed innovative community mental retardation and mental health services and served as Regional Administrator and Superintendent of Northampton State Hospital. Dr. Hogan served from 1984 to 1987 as Deputy Commissioner, and from 1987 to 1991 as Commissioner of Mental Health in Connecticut. In 1990, he was credited with leading Connecticut to a fourth-place ranking among the state mental health systems.

Dr. Hogan is the fourth speaker to deliver the annual Dudley Allen Sargent Distinguished Lecture. The Dudley Allen Sargent Distinguished Lecture Series began in 1999 to mark the seventieth anniversary of Sargent College’s incorporation into Boston University.
