ENDNOTE TUTORIAL FOR BEGINNERS
Open Endnote
Click on Endnote icon, or go
to start – programs – Endnote – Endnote program
Set up a new library
Select “create a new Endnote
library”
Give your new library a file
name and choose a location familiar to you – click save
You now have an empty
library to work with
[If opening an existing
library select “open an existing Endnote library” and choose the
file when first opening the Endnote program]
Connect to a database
To begin adding to your
library click on “Tools” – connect – connect.
A list of potential
databases appears. Some are free and some require a subscription.
Free Databases:
Choose your database and
click connect
Searching the database
The possible search criteria
is broad and dictated by the database connected to.
Just select the appropriate
search option from the pull down menu and enter your search term(s)
Check the search remote box
If you get too many hits use
combinations and/or author initials.
Import reference(s) into library
Select (by clicking once)
the desired reference, or references, and click “copy reference to”
and select your library. This moves the reference to your own library
To enter a “new” reference that you may
not be able to find:
References – new
reference – select reference type – enter information – file
– close reference
To insert reference into word document:
Select desired reference in
Endnote library
Select desired location for
reference in your word document
Tools – Endnote
– insert selected citation(s)
Format bibliography
Select a reference style by
clicking “Edit” in Endnote – output styles – open style
manager
Search by style name or
category
Check the box of desired
style
If your desired style does
not appear, you can enter your own style by selecting
“Edit” in Endnote – output styles – new
style. This can become a little more tricky.
Alternatively if your
desired style does not appear, you can modify a similar style by first
selecting the similar style and then selecting “Edit” in Endnote
– output styles – edit “journal name”
Changing reference styles
In Word: Tools –
Endnote – format bibliography
Select browse next to
“with output style” and choose a new reference style. Click OK.
