BU Sargent College’s financial aid resources include scholarship funds, Federal Ford direct loans, departmental teaching/research assistantships, and traineeships in specific areas through federally funded grants. Awards are based on academic promise, demonstrated need, and the availability of funds. Eligibility for some types of assistance is determined by documented financial need through the FAFSA. Individual departments and faculty requirements determine teaching and research assistantships. Federally funded traineeships are program specific and vary from year to year based on grants received by College faculty. Available funds do not allow us to provide assistance to all graduate students and parental support is taken into consideration for Boston University scholarships. Most BU Sargent College Scholarships given to master level students are a two-year commitment. Scholarships, as well as, the Federal Ford direct loans are split between the fall and spring semesters. Scholarships are based upon full time status, unless otherwise stated in your award letter. If a student drops below full time status, the student forfeits their scholarship for that semester.

BU Sargent College students who are in a five or six year program are considered undergraduate students for their first 4 years (or 8 full time semesters). The start of the fifth year after receiving an undergraduate degree, they are considered graduate students. Boston University’s main financial commitment is to the undergraduate population. BU Sargent College has limited funding for our graduate population. Most graduate students fund their advanced education through loans. As graduate students, most students are eligible to receive $20,500 in federal loans as well as alternative loans.
