A Registered Dietitian is recognized as a food and nutrition expert in the United States. Many jobs in food and nutrition fields require this credential.

There are four criteria that must be met to become a Registered Dietitian:

  1. A minimum of a bachelor’s degree must be earned at a regionally accredited university or college in the U.S.
  2. A series of courses required by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics known as the Didactic Program in Dietetics must be completed either by themselves or as part of an academic degree. (Note that the Dietetics option at BU meets all of these requirements.)
  3. An Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics accredited Dietetic Internship must be completed.
  4. Students must pass a national registration exam.
