Registered Dietitian Nutritionist Status
A Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) is recognized as a food and nutrition expert in the United States. Many jobs in food and nutrition fields require this credential.
There are four criteria that must be met to become a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist:
- A minimum of a bachelor’s degree must be earned at a regionally accredited university or college in the U.S.
- A series of courses required by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND) known as the Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD) must be completed either alone or as part of an academic degree. (Note that the Dietetics track at BU meets all of these requirements.)
- An ACEND accredited supervised practice experience (e.g., Dietetic Internship) must be completed.
- Students must pass a national registration exam.
