our mission
The mission of the Department of Physical Therapy and Athletic Training is to advance, disseminate, and apply knowledge in the fields of physical therapy and athletic training. The Department strives to develop critically thinking, innovative, and evidence-based professionals who engage in life-long learning and leadership in the areas of clinical practice, research and community service.
About the department
By combining a strong foundation in basic sciences with the applied sciences in movement disorders and an emphasis on clinical experience, the Department of Physical Therapy and Athletic Training at BU Sargent College is dedicated to promoting the health of all people and the rehabilitation of people with injury or disease.
Physical therapy and athletic training specialties are moving beyond traditional settings into new and expanded dimensions of health care. Sargent College’s distinctive interdisciplinary, evidence-based approach combines challenging coursework, real-world research opportunities, custom-tailored clinical placements, and the opportunity to collaborate with faculty who are leaders in their fields.
Students are encouraged to question, think crucially, evaluate objectively, and search for new answers to the exciting challenges in these evolving fields. Our learning environment fosters the development of human values and effective interpersonal skills that are the mark of outstanding health professionals.
Programs in Athletic Training
Program Focus: To produce athletic trainers who are evidence-based practitioners and skilled diagnosticians who are prepared to function in a multitude of practice settings.
Possible Career Paths:
- Practice clinically as an athletic trainer in schools, college, professional sports teams, sports medicine centers, industrial settings and corporate health programs
- Practice as a physician extender
- Teach

Programs in Physical Therapy
Program Focus:To prepare doctors of physical therapy who are evidence-based practitioners skilled in all aspects of patient/client management including examination, evaluation (diagnosis/prognosis) and intervention.
Possible Career Paths:
- Practice clinically as physical therapists in a variety of settings such as hospitals, rehabilitation centers, private practice/outpatient clinics, sports medicine centers, schools, nursing homes and patient homes
- Become a board-certified specialist
- Teach

- Consult with other healthcare professionals, corporations and industries
- Promote public health and wellness
