SAR HP 210 Introduction to Critical Inquiry (2 credits)
The objectives of this course are to expose students to available resources for research and study in the biomedical sciences and develop students’ ability to critically evaluate these resources. Resources will include online databases (e.g., Lexis Nexus, OVID). Exploration of advanced internet search techniques and copyright issues will be included.
SAR HP 353 organization and delivery of Health Care (4 credits)
Analysis of the current structure of US health care system and its influences on the provision of services.
SAR HS 352 Health Care Information Systems (4 credits)
The purpose of this course is to introduce students to the basic concepts of computer hardware and software including networks and telecommunication and the planning and implementation issues that vary with information systems across the various health care settings. The role of information processing in the assessment of facilities and clinical decision making will be explored. Data from patients, system and information security, privacy issues and the use of information systems in patient education and services will be included.
SAR Hs 300 epidemiology (4 credits)
The purpose of this course is to introduce students to critical concepts for evaluating health care research. Previous coursework in basic statistics is a prerequisite as the class will use quantitative framework to explore analysis undertaken by health care studies. This course will focus on the evaluation of research decisions from the inception of a study to its conclusions. The methodology and experimental designs in health care research necessary for clinical trials and evidence-based practice will be emphasized.
SAR HS 405 Health Care Practicum (4-8 credits)
Practical experience in a health care work environment: public health department, clinic, hospital, community or industrial setting.
SAR HS 480 Senior Thesis (4-8 credits)
Senior standing, consent of advisor and 3.3 GPA. Limited to academically excellent students who have identified a research area approved prior to registration by a faculty member in the Department of Health Sciences or affiliated agency.
