Music-Driven Neuroplasticity: Impacts on Speech Processing – 9/30/13

Join us for the Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences Research Colloquium Series featuring Dr. Aniruddh Patel of Tufts University. The talk will be titled, “Music-Driven Neuroplasticity: Impacts on Speech Processing.”

Monday, September 30

5:00 pm

Sargent College, Room 102

Reception to follow (21+)

As mounting evidence suggests that musical training enhances the brain’s processing of speech sounds, Dr. Aniruddh Patel will review the evidence for such effects, and offer a theoretical framework for understanding how and why they occur. Experimental research motivated by this framework will also be presented, as well as specific suggestions for the development of animal models.

Dr. Aniruddh (Ani) Patel is Associate Professor of Psychology at Tufts University. His work focuses on music cognition: the mental processes involved in making, perceiving, and responding to music. His 2008 book, Music, Language, and the Brain, explores the relationship between music and language.
