February 4, 2011:

Greetings Student Organization Officers!

The staff at Student Activities is excited to see you back in our offices at 1 University Road and hope that the Spring 2011 semester is off to a great start for you and your group. We’ve got some important information and updates to share with you, so please take a few minutes to read this carefully and then pass it on to the members of your group!

  • Welcome to our new Coordinators Abby and Bryan! Student Activities is excited to announce that we have hired 2 new full-time professionals who will work exclusively with student organizations in our Resource Room! Now, at any time during our open hours, there will be an experienced SAO professional ready to assist who will know about your organization, the important events you’ve got planned, and how to get things done! By combining these folks with our already awesome Activities Consultants, Student Activities is now more than ever a place where you can find someone to support your group’s ideas and efforts toward making them a reality.
  • We hope that by now you have experienced the recently upgraded You Do @ BU site. Student group leaders have already let us know that they find this new You Do @ BU to be much quicker and quite a bit more user-friendly and intuitive. Our software vendor CollegiateLink made some awesome changes and additions based on the feedback we received from many of you, and we are excited to roll out some new features that we hope you will find useful in managing your organization and events. Check out this handy Student Leader User Guide that outlines some of the tools available to you as a group leader. Please take a look at the User Guide, and be on the lookout for upcoming information on more specific You Do @ BU trainings and tips.
  • One of the enhanced features in You Do @ BU is the messaging capabilities, and Student Activities will be moving all of its communications with student organizations to the site. It will be very important that your organization ensure that all of your officers and Organization Advisor have “accepted” their roles in the group and that you maintain a correct roster so that we can get the right information to the right people in your group. Also, PLEASE make sure that all of your group members are reading emails from this sender: You Do @ BU(noreply@collegiatelink.net). Be sure to set your email to not move these messages to junk or spam folders. These will be important messages either from your individual group leaders or important announcements from us at Student Activities.
  • Need some extra funds for your organization? Student Activities just returned from a great lunch meeting with reps (and a BU alum) from the on-campus restaurant Scoozi. This great little eatery reached out to us because they would like to offer a great fundraising opportunity to all of you just like the one that Uno’s does. Here are the details:

Scoozi would like to host your next student organization fundraising event! Located at 580 Comm Ave (across from SMG), it's an easy on-campus location with great food!

15% of the sales will be donated back to your organization! It's a great way to raise money, hang out, and enjoy unbelievable food.

Please email Katie@scooziboston.com with your requested date and time and we will send you a coupon with your organizations name and event details for you to distribute.

Our menu is available online for your viewing at Scooziboston.com.

Rules:

Don't:

  • Please do not distribute the coupon for your event within our restaurant

Do:

  • Please tell everyone you know--the more attendees, the more your organization raises.
  • Please tell everyone they can photocopy the coupon or forward it to their friends.
  • Please tell everyone they can also show the coupon from their email on their cell phones.
  • Please tell everyone to show the coupon before they order so that we can make sure your organization gets credit for the purchase
  • Please have lots of fun!!

  • In case you didn’t see the post on You Do, the New Group Recognition Request process is now open to anyone who’d like to start a new student organization. As of now we’ve got 10 new groups proposed, and submissions will be accepted until 5pm on Friday, February 11. After that, all of you will be contacted via You Do @ BU and asked to take part in a survey to let Student Activities know if we should recognize these proposed new groups or not. We really want to hear what you think, so keep your eye out for that!
  • Student Activities has a couple of viewing parties coming up, and we’d love for you to join us for some free food and prizes. First, this Sunday February 6th we’ll be hosting a Superbowl party that starts at 6:30pm in BU Central and won't end until we have a Super Bowl XLV Champ! Student Activities still thinks the Patriots are going to win it all! The very next day, those of you who won’t already be rooting on the Terriers in person at the Gahhden can join us to watch the first round of the BU Invitational, err, we mean the 59th Annual Beanpot Tournament. Again, there will be plenty of free food and some fantastic BU Hockey gear raffled away. We’ll be cheering for the Terriers at 8pm in BU Central. We hope to see you there for both!
  • Want to invite thousands of people to your event? Have it posted in our SAO Treasure Hunt Email! Every 2 weeks, we send an email to our newsletter mailing list that showcases student group events and ends with a clue leading to a prize. We are always looking for new events to include, so send us yours by emailing the information (name of event, date, time, location, a short description/summary, logo/ad, and any other details) to saoweb@gmail.com. (If you’re not already signed up to receive Treasure Hunt Emails, fix that by going here)
  • Save The Date: The Excellence in Student Activities Awards show is going to be held on Monday, May 2nd and this year promises to be bigger and better than ever! Keep your eye out for information on how to nominate a group or individual for awards, several of which include cash prizes for winning organizations!

That’s about it for now. As always, let us know if you have questions!

Hugs,

Student Activities
