The Boston University Police Department is a full-time, professional law enforcement agency that also provides a wide variety of public services, including alarms, emergency medical assistance, investigating suspicious circumstances, and responding to and investigating criminal matters. Patrols are conducted throughout the Boston University area 24 hours a day and span an area that includes over 132 acres of University-owned property and surrounding streets. Emergency response time is generally under three minutes to any location on campus.
Boston University Medical Campus Public Safety Department

Public Safety officers at the Boston University Medical Campus provide building security and safety services to Medical Campus personnel. They provide physical security to the Medical Campus 24 hours a day, furnish escorts, and offer other assistance. The Medical Campus is also patrolled by Boston University Police Department officers, who represent the primary law enforcement agency on the Medical Campus.
Campus Security Authorities
Certain University officials are mandated to report crimes to the police. Each year, the University identifies individuals who fit the definition of Campus Security Authorities (CSA) and provides training to assist them in fulfilling this important role. Please visit our CSA website to access the CSA training presentation. BUPD officers are also available to present the training to groups.

University Security Council
The administrators of the University Security Council and senior members of the BUPD meet weekly to coordinate the many security programs operating at Boston University. Information on current incidents is reviewed and recommendations for security improvements are discussed.
Crisis Management Team
When any emergency, tragedy, or other unusual event occurs that will affect the campus community, this group meets as necessary to make assessments and respond to the community’s needs. Recent issues addressed by the Crisis Management Team include the death of an enrolled student, unruly crowds at Red Sox playoff games, and the report of a missing student. Crisis Management Team representatives may vary depending on the situation and come from all areas of the University’s administration.
Mugar Memorial Library Security

Library Security staff are responsible for ensuring the safety and protection of all individuals, their belongings, and University property. Security staff are located at the entrance/exit area of the Mugar Memorial Library. In addition, Security staff routinely patrol the building and are identifiable by the burgundy blazers they wear.
