Safety on Campus

Campus Crime Information Dissemination
Open Police Log Laws
Massachusetts law requires all police agencies in the state to maintain open police logs. The public has a right of access during business hours to summary information regarding reported incidents. The identification of victims of sexual assault, or attempted sexual assault, is prohibited by law.
Federal law requires open logs be maintained by colleges and universities. The Boston University police log is at the police station at 32 Harry Agganis Way.
Campus Sex Offender Reporting
www.bu.edu/police Federal law requires states to ask every sex offender registered under “Megan’s Law” if they are or will be enrolled at or employed by a college or university. State governments will then provide that information to the school’s police department or a local police department with jurisdiction for the campus.
Students and employees may obtain any information provided by any state under this law at the Boston University Police Department, 32 Harry Agganis Way, during business hours, or on the Boston University Police Department website.
Crime and Safety Awareness Programs
Boston University presents crime and safety awareness workshops during summer and fall orientations to both parents and students, and issues information on safety and crime prevention. The University welcomes questions and seeks to address concerns regarding the safety and security of the campus community.

Timely Warnings
In the event a situation arises, either on or off campus, that, in the judgment of the Chief of Police and Executive Director of Public Safety, constitutes an ongoing or continuing threat, a campus-wide “timely warning” will be issued. The warning will be issued through the BU Alert System. Notice will be sent via text message, voice mail, and e-mail. Notice will also be posted on the BU home page, BU web pages, and scrolled on the University’s cable television system.
Boston University Police Website:
www.bu.edu/police
The department’s website provides current campus crime statistics, crime information bulletins, and information about the University’s police services.
Town Hall Meetings
Held throughout the academic year, town hall meetings give students an opportunity to meet with the Chief of Police and Executive Director of Public Safety and Dean of Students to discuss safety and security on campus.
Safety Procedure, Statistics, Reports and Documentation
The safety of all our students is of the utmost concern to Boston University. Although the condition of privately owned off-campus apartments is not the University's responsibility, our concern remains the same. Students living on campus have the benefit of the University's stringent and effective fire-safety precautions, but they are just as responsible for knowing campus fire-safety procedures and regulations. Visit us on the web and learn what you can do to be safe at BU.
Missing Student Notification
Any person who believes that a person is missing for 24 hours must report it to the Boston University Police Department. If you have reason to believe that a person is missing against their will or is in danger, DO NOT WAIT! Report it to the police immediately. Each student living in an on-campus housing facility has the option to register a confidential contact person to be notified in case the student is reported missing. Only authorized University Officials and law enforcement in furtherance of a missing person investigation may have access to this information. Even if students have not registered a confidential contact person, local law enforcement will be notified that the student has been reported missing. The parent or guardian of students less than 18 years of age and not emancipated must be notified if the student is reported missing. The procedure to follow if you believe a student is missing for more than 24 hours is to notify the Boston University Police at 617-353-2121. The police will take appropriate action.
